This training develops our staff’s knowledge, understanding and practical skills to provide safe, compassionate and trauma-informed support. It promotes a person-centred approach that recognises the impact of an individual’s past experiences, supports emotional wellbeing and encourages positive relationships.
The training focuses on:
Understanding childhood trauma and attachment needs – recognising how early experiences, trauma and unmet attachment needs can affect emotional development, behaviour, relationships and wellbeing.
Recognising the impact of lived experiences – understanding how past experiences influence an individual’s feelings, responses, relationships and support needs.
Understanding shame and survival responses – recognising how trauma can affect emotional regulation and contribute to behaviours of concern.
Building trust and positive relationships – developing meaningful connections that promote emotional safety, trust, co-regulation and positive, lasting change.
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) – understanding the reasons behind behaviours of concern, recognising potential triggers and using proactive strategies to reduce distress and promote positive outcomes.
Effective communication and de-escalation – developing the skills to recognise early warning signs, respond calmly and use appropriate therapeutic approaches to prevent and safely de-escalate situations.
Safe physical intervention – developing practical skills in guiding, escorting, one and two-person holds, and breakaway techniques, with an emphasis on safety, dignity and the use of the least restrictive approach.
Post-crisis support and recovery – understanding how to provide reassurance, rebuild trust, support emotional recovery and maintain a positive and supportive environment.
Promoting choice, dignity and independence – ensuring individuals are actively involved in their support and that their rights, preferences and individual needs are respected.
Reflection and continuous improvement – recognising the importance of reviewing incidents, learning from experiences and adapting support strategies to improve outcomes.
Practical competency assessments and refresher training – ensuring staff can demonstrate their understanding and ability to apply safe, appropriate intervention techniques through practical assessments, with refresher training to maintain their knowledge, confidence and competence.
